Lesson Plan-Grade 6
Lesson Title: Fractions
& Percents
State Standards: MA.6.A.5.1 - Use equivalent forms of fractions,
decimals, and percents to solve problems
Grade : 6 (FCAT)
Subject: Mathematics
Teaching Aids: Power Point slides
Objectives:
1. Students will practice computing
fractions.
2. Students will practice
computing percentages.
3. Students will convert fractions
into percentages.
Lesson Procedure and
Evaluation:
Recapitulation:(10
mins): The student needs to recall the types of fractions &
operations on fractions. The student should also be able to know about decimal
numbers and percentages.
Explanation: (40 mins)
Activity 1: Convert fractions to decimals
To convert x/y into decimal we divide numerator over denominator.
Ex: 3/4 = 0.75 ( Explain the
student the division if required )
Activity 2: Convert decimals to fractions
To
convert decimal into fraction we multiply both Numerator and Denominator
by 1 followed by number of 0’s which is equivalent to the number of digits after
the decimal place then write it in simplest
form.
Ex: 0.25 = 25/100 = 1/4 .
Activity 3: Convert decimals to percents
To
convert decimal into percentage we multiply both Numerator and
Denominator by 1 followed by number of 0’s which is equivalent to the number of
digits after the decimal place then write it in
simplest form and multiply by 100.
Ex: 0.25 =
25/100 = (1/4) x 100 = 25% .
Activity 4: Convert percents to decimals
To convert
percentage to decimal we divide by 100 (and remove the "%" sign) and
the easiest way to divide by 100 is to move
the decimal point 2 places to the left.
: 75% = 75/100 = 0.75
Activity 5: Convert fractions to percents
To
convert fractions to percents we multiply the given fraction by 100 and simplify it.
Ex: 3/4 = (3/4) x
100 = 75%
Activity 6: Convert percents to fractions
To convert percentage to decimal
we divide by 100 (and remove the "%" sign)
Ex: 35% = 35/100
