Lesson Title: Scientific notation

State standard:  MA.8.A.6.1 - Use exponents and scientific notation to write large and small numbers and vice versa and to solve problems

Grade: 7(FCAT)

Teaching Aids: Power Point slides

Objectives:

1)     Students will express very small numbers in Scientific Notation.

2)      Students will express very large numbers in Scientific Notation.

     3)  Binary Operations on the numbers expressed in the form of

          Scientific Notation

Lesson Procedure and Evaluation:

Recapitulation: (10 minutes): The student needs to recognize the base and the exponent of the numbers expressed in exponential form. The student should also be able to know about the Laws of Indices.

Explanation (40 mins)

Activity 1: Expressing very small (including Decimal numbers) numbers in Scientific

                 Notation.

  Ex: 0.00032 = 3.2 X 10-4

Activity 2: Expressing very large numbers in Scientific Notation.

  Ex: 560000000 = 5.6 X 107

Activity 3: Addition of numbers expressed in Scientific Notation.

   Ex: 5.2 X 103 + 2.5 X 103   = 103 (5.2 + 2.5) = 7.7 X 103

Activity 4: Subtraction of numbers expressed in Scientific Notation

Ex: 13.1 X 105 – 3.6 X 105   = 105 (13.1 – 3.6) = 9.5 X 103

Activity 5: Multiplication of numbers expressed in Scientific Notation

Ex: 7.5 X 103 X 2.5 X 106    =   (7.5 X 2.5) 103+6 = 18.75 X 109   = 1.875 X 1010

Activity 6: Division of numbers expressed in Scientific Notation

Ex: 7.5 X 109 / 2.5 X 104    =   (7.5 / 2.5) 109-4 = 3 X 105  

Recapitulation and Evaluation: (10 mins)

1. Express 0.0012 in Scientific Notation.

2.  Express 150000000 in Scientific Notation.

3. Add:  8.9 X 105 + 7.3 X 105  

4. Subtraction: 19.22 X 103 – 12.19X 103  

5. Multiply: 5.8 X 106 X 3.9X 105   

6. Divide: 3.6 X 108 / 1.2 X 103
