Lesson Title: Measurement

State Standards: MA.5.G.5.2 - Compare, contrast, and convert units of measure within the same dimension (length, mass, or time) to solve problems

Grade: 5 (FCAT)

Subject: Mathematics

Teaching Aids: Power Point slides

Objectives:

1)      Student will convert one form of units of length to another.

2)      Student will convert one form of units of Mass to another

3)      Student will convert  one form of units of Time to another

Lesson Procedure and Evaluation:

Recapitulation (10 minutes):

Student can identify the units of length (Millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilometer and mile)

Student can identify the units of Mass (Milligrams, grams, kilograms and tons)         

Student can identify the units of Time (seconds, minutes and hours)

Explanation: (40 mins)

Activity 1: Converting length from one type of units to different type of units.

                     E.g.1) 300 cm = 3 m (1m = 100 cm)

                           2) 4.5 M = 4500 cm

                           3) 5 km = 5000 m (1 km = 1000 m)

Activity 2 Converting Mass from one type of units to different type of units.  

                   E.g.1) 4500 gm = 4.5 kg (1kg = 1000 grams)

                          2) 16 gm = 1600 milligrams (1gram = 100 milligrams)

Activity 3: Converting Time from one type of units to different type of units.

                   E.g.1) 3600 seconds = 1 hour.

                          2) 180 minutes = 3 hours (60 minutes = 1 hour)

Recapitulation and Evaluation: (10 mins)

1)    Convert 12.5 m into centimeters.

2)    Convert 1350 grams into kilograms.

3)    Convert 2600 seconds into hours.
